Guys, believe me when I tell you I ain't the kind of person who easily becomes a fan. But I, like many of you, have fallen madly in love with Lupita Nyong'o's class, talent and beauty. This is me yesterday when I learned she had won the Oscar for "Best supporting actress".
She has been on the cover of every magazine this year and the red carpet season has been all about her. Once again, she stole the show at the Oscars when she arrived with the prettiest dress, and she totally won me over when she said the color (a shade blue) was inspired by her hometown Nairobi. Yeeeeeeeeeees! Give props to the Motherland Lupita! She made us all proud and her smile is a constant reminder that no dream is out of reach.
Her speech on beauty standards and self-image at the Essence Magazine's Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon had me all in my feelings too. I personally never had an issue with my skin color (and I have to thank my awesome parents for that), but her honesty and truthfulness touched me deeply.
So, to you Lupita... may you continue to inspire us with your work, your words and your success. And to you guys, remember that "no matter where you're from, your dreams are valid".
